A. Potential Issue:
Customer sees an "Active Air Box" message. This is not the same as a check engine light (CEL); it simply means the Active Air Box is not functioning correctly.
Affected Part Numbers: 75-5068, 75-5068D
B. Possible Causes:
- Air box is not installed correctly, causing the swing gate to contact the filter.
- Swing gate is missing or not installed on the motor shaft.
- Swing gate arm is incorrectly installed on the shaft.
- Customer attempted to rotate the swing gate manually, stripping the arm.
- Swing gate arm was removed after installation, causing damage.
C. Solutions:
Cause #1: Air box not installed correctly
i. Confirm Proper Installation: Ensure the air box sits flush and the pegs on the bottom fit securely into the battery tray holes.
ii. Confirm Filter Clearance: Verify there's a visible gap between the swing arm dam and the filter bottom.
iii. Drive 30–50 miles: If properly installed, the message should disappear within this distance. If not, continue with the steps below.
Cause #2: Swing gate not installed
Check Swing Gate Arm Installation: The arm must always be installed—even if the dam isn’t used. Warning: Never operate the vehicle without the swing gate arm, or you will trigger a permanent Active Air error requiring a reset by S&B.
Cause #3: Swing gate installed incorrectly
Verify Alignment: Make sure the flat side of the swing gate arm matches the flat side of the motor’s metal shaft.
Cause #4: Swing gate manually rotated and stripped
Test for Damage: Gently try to rotate the installed swing gate arm. It should not move freely. If it spins loosely, it has been stripped. Contact S&B Filters to order replacement part AI1622-00.
Note: Do not try to manually rotate the motor shaft; it does not move without power and forcing it will cause damage.
Once you receive your replacement, follow the reset instructions at the end of this article before installation.
Cause #5: Swing gate removed after installation
Check for Post-Removal Damage: If the arm was removed after installation, it may be stripped. Gently test as above. If it spins freely, replace with part AI1622-00.
How to Reset the Active Air Motor:
- Remove the S&B air box.
- Remove the swing gate motor.
- Place the motor into the factory air box.
- Connect the harness. You don’t need to fully reinstall the box—just set it on the engine bay.
- Push the start button without pressing the brake (this powers the system without starting the engine).
- Within 10–30 seconds, the swing gate motor will beep, confirming the reset. If not, contact S&B support.
- Reinstall the motor onto the S&B air box and reinstall in the vehicle.
